MARINE-ECOMED (MARINE Education and COmmunication network on the MEDiterranean) is an Erasmus+ project that aims to foster education and research through a strategic association. Its main objective is to integrate professional approaches and experiences into sustainable management of ocean and coastal areas, in order to improve the quality of research and education in this multidisciplinary subject.
A total of six partners participate in the project:
- Three academic institutions:
–Iuav University of Venice
–Aix-Marseille University (AMU)
–Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTh)
- Three non-governmental organizations:
–The Tethys Research Institute
Over the course of the project’s three years, an Intensive Study Project (ISP) will be launched, focused on planning and managing ocean and coastal areas, where SUBMON will be introducing the concept of Ocean Literacy. The ISP is conducted through two complementary modules: the first consists of two remote-learning modules, and the second is a face-to-face two-week workshop. The remote-learning modules include interactive virtual classes and tutorials given over an online platform, which also acts as a virtual space for students from different universities and origins to interact with one another. The modules will be carried out by both academic institutions and by NGOs.
The two-week workshop is face-to-face, where students meet and carry out in-depth group work on a real case study of the local Ocean and coastal area where the workshop is located. This is the perfect opportunity to apply the knowledge obtained during the two previous modules. The target group are students from the three participant universities, and the ISP will be held three times during the project. The first year, it will be at Aix-Marseille University (2019), the second, at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (2020), and the third at the Iuav University of Venice (2021).
During the project, a MOOC (Massive Open Online Course) will also be prepared for planning and managing ocean and coastal areas, along with a manual on education and communication in the Mediterranean.
