The European project SEA2SEE, of which SUBMON is a partner, has just launched the new and final edition of its MOOC (Massive Open Online Course), “Navigating the Sea to Plate Journey for Responsible Seafood Consumption”, a free online course designed to promote knowledge and awareness around responsible seafood consumption.

This course is part of SEA2SEE’s Consumer Engagement Strategy, which aims to improve understanding of seafood products among consumers and key actors across the food value chain, while providing practical tools to support more sustainable consumption habits.

This new edition has been updated with additional content, new interactive resources and a more comprehensive learning experience.

What’s new in the learning modules

This edition introduces new content across its five modules. In the fisheries module (LM2), a new section on sustainable fisheries has been added, featuring a talk by Mafalda Rangel, an expert in the field, who presents the process of establishing marine protected areas of community interest, using the Algarve Marine Protected Area (Portugal) as a case study. This approach helps learners better understand the challenges and opportunities linked to fisheries management in today’s sustainability context.

The aquaculture module (LM3) has also been expanded with new content exploring how aquaculture farms operate both at sea and on land, as well as the use of technology to optimise production monitoring and management. Throughout the module, the course showcases the installation process of an offshore aquaculture facility in Greece and offers a tour of the SEAentia facilities in Peniche (Portugal), bringing real-world examples closer to learners. In addition, a new section on environmental impact assessment in aquaculture has been introduced, presenting Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) as a tool to evaluate and reduce emissions and the overall environmental footprint of aquaculture operations.

It is the responsible consumption module (LM5) that incorporates the most updates. A new section has been added on the role of women in fisheries and aquaculture, highlighting a social dimension of the sector that often receives less attention. The module also includes new content on health and nutrition developed by the Nutrition and Food Safety Research Institute of the University of Barcelona (INSA-UB), as well as a series of videos, “A Roadmap to your Catch”, illustrating the journey of seafood from the ocean to the plate.

New resources and ways to interact

Alongside the updated content, this edition also expands the tools available within the course. Interactive Kahoot! quizzes have been introduced to support learning, together with an updated storymap, new animated videos and new infographics that visually summarise key messages from each module. Altogether, these resources aim to make the learning experience more accessible and engaging, adapting to different profiles and learning paces.

A key new feature is that participants can now obtain a certificate of completion for each individual module, rather than only upon finishing the course as a whole. In addition, those who complete the full MOOC and obtain the final certificate will automatically be entered into a prize draw for items linked to responsible consumption, such as a portable cooler bag for buying fish or an apron.

Who is it for?

The course is open and accessible to anyone interested in the health of our seas and oceans and in their role as informed consumers. It is particularly aimed at those working in or communicating about seafood and marine food systems, including professionals in education and hospitality, fishmongers, supermarkets, and food bloggers, among others.

The course is free and can be completed at your own pace. Registration is open until 30 June via this link. Although the project ends on that date and the MOOC will not receive further content updates, it will remain available until the end of 2027, as its content will continue to be relevant and up to date for the seafood sector.
